How to Make Your CV Stand Out for Seasonal Opportunities

Shazamme System User • September 30, 2024

Seasonal job opportunities can be a fantastic way to gain experience, earn extra income, and build up new skills. Whether you’re a student looking for work over the holidays, a parent seeking extra income, or simply want to dip your toes into a new industry, a well-prepared CV is essential.

Employers often receive a flood of applications for these short-term roles, so standing out is key. Here are our top tips for tailoring your CV to catch the eye of seasonal recruiters and land that perfect opportunity:

1. Tailor Your CV for Seasonal Roles

The most crucial step in applying for seasonal roles is tailoring your CV for each job. Seasonal employers look for specific skills and qualities, so make sure your CV reflects what they're seeking. Study the job description and highlight the skills and experience that match those requirements. For example, if you’re applying for a retail role, emphasise customer service and cash-handling. By aligning your CV with the role’s demands, you show that you’re a serious and suitable candidate.

2. Highlight Transferable Skills

Seasonal jobs, whether in retail, hospitality, or logistics, often require a set of core skills like customer service, teamwork, and time management. Even if you haven’t worked in a seasonal job before, think about experiences where you’ve developed these abilities. Whether it’s working on group projects, volunteering, or being part of a sports team, these activities have likely honed your transferable skills. List these skills prominently in your CV, and be sure to include examples of how you have demonstrated them.

3. Keep It Concise

Seasonal employers often sift through many applications, so a clear and concise CV is crucial. Ideally, keep it to one or two pages. Focus on the most relevant information, cutting out any details that don't apply to the role you're seeking. Use bullet points, short sentences, and clear headings to make it easy to read quickly.

4. Emphasise Flexibility and Availability

Seasonal roles often come with irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Make sure to include a brief note about your flexibility and availability in your CV. This shows employers that you’re prepared to meet the demands of the job and can be an immediate asset to their team.

5. Include a Brief Personal Statement

A short, tailored personal statement at the start of your CV can set the tone for the rest of the document. In a few sentences, mention your enthusiasm for the seasonal role, relevant skills, and why you’re a great fit. For example:

"Friendly and adaptable student with excellent customer service skills seeking a seasonal retail position. Experienced in fast-paced environments, eager to contribute to a dynamic team during the busy holiday period."

6. Check for Errors

Before sending off your CV, proofread it carefully to catch any spelling or grammatical mistakes. An error-free CV demonstrates attention to detail and professionalism, two qualities that employers highly value. It might help to ask a friend or family member to review it as well.

Seasonal job opportunities can fill up quickly, so now is the time to start preparing your CV. A well-crafted CV can make a huge difference in catching an employer’s attention. By highlighting your relevant skills, experiences, and flexibility, you put yourself in the best position to land that job.
