Right skills or right attitude, which should you consider?
Have you as an employer ever thought “this candidate has great experience for the role, but not sure if they have the right attitude or would fit our team”?
As the Regional Manager of the Employer Service team for Turas Nua in the Midlands Region our central objective is to support both employers and jobseekers in finding full-time sustainable employment. This means ensuring we find people with the required skills but also with the right attitude and willingness to learn.
What's more important, the right skills or the right attitude?
In a recent questionnaire we asked some of our employers, when they are hiring, do skills trump attitude or is it a mixture of both? And what we found was:
HR people tend to focus more on experience & skills while Managers /Owners look for personality and whether they fit with the culture of the company.
The majority of respondents also stated if a job candidate can demonstrate they have the right attitude and willingness to learn and adapt, they are more likely to hire them over the level of experience they have acquired, particularly for entry level roles. Employers are looking for candidates who are enthusiastic about growing with the company and who are willing to contribute to a positive work environment.
Technical skills, on the other hand, can be taught and our research highlighted that employers do not expect the employee to know everything about the role before they start work. Regardless of the new employee’s skill level and experience, an induction and on the job training should be offered to all new starters. Not only does this set them up for success in their new role, it is also a great opportunity for the new employee to demonstrate their personality and interpersonal skills. First impressions are lasting impressions.
How do we help you find the right employee?
We consult with employers across all industry sectors to source suitable candidates that fit the culture and operation of the company based on the candidate’s skills and attitude. To achieve this, we work with the employer to understand the company culture and business goals along with the core role requirements. We then take the information on board and assess potential candidates that would suit the role. Our team regularly meets with our candidates therefore employers can rely on us to screen and assess candidates that will suit not only the role but the culture of your organisation, saving you money and time.
An employee’s attitude and willingness to learn can make all the difference to the work environment and in particular throughout their induction and onboarding process.
