In this article, you will learn about the Work Placement Experience Programme (WPEP), a comprehensive initiative aimed at bolstering Ireland’s workforce. We'll explore its many benefits, understanding how it serves as a valuable resource for individuals seeking to enhance their career prospects.

Additionally, we'll delve into the advantages it offers to employers, highlighting how the programme fosters a mutually beneficial environment for both parties involved. Join us as we uncover the key aspects of WPEP and its significant impact in bridging the gap between job seekers and the employment market.

What is WPEP?

WPEP is designed to provide valuable work experience for individuals who are either entering the job market for the first time or returning after a period of unemployment. It's a chance to re-train and gain experience in new roles while being placed in a host organisation. This programme is inclusive, catering to those aged 18–65, who have been unemployed for at least 6 months and are currently receiving a qualifying social welfare payment.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, participants must be receiving one of several specific social welfare payments, such as Jobseeker's Benefit, Disability Allowance, or One-Parent Family Payment. Notably, certain payments like the One-Parent Family or Disability Allowance automatically qualify you for WPEP without the need for a 156-day qualifying period.

Programme Structure and Benefits

Participants are paired with a host organisation and provided with a case officer from the DSP for guidance and support. They can also discuss the programme with their Turas Nua Caseworker, who can provide additional context about the benefits.

The programme encourages learning and development, requiring participants to complete 60 hours of training, with a focus on gaining accredited or sector-specific skills. At the end of the placement, participants receive a reference outlining their work experience and acquired skills.

Duration and Compensation

The WPEP lasts for six months, offering 30 hours of work per week, inclusive of training hours. Participants are entitled to public holidays and 11 days of annual leave. A weekly allowance of €335 is provided by the DSP.

How to Apply

Interested individuals can find and apply for WPEP placements on jobsireland.ie. The application process may involve submitting a CV or attending an interview. It's essential to complete the necessary forms jointly with the employer and submit them to the Work Placement Unit.

Conclusion

The Work Placement Experience Programme is an excellent initiative for those seeking to re-enter the workforce or pivot their careers. By offering training, experience, and financial support, WPEP stands as a valuable resource for job seekers and a great opportunity for employers to discover new talent.
