Changing your CV to suit your career in 3 steps

March 3, 2021

Whether you're applying for your first job, or looking to make a change, your CV is the first port of call when it comes to preparation. Creating (and maintaining!) a CV that is tailored to your industry is the most effective way to ensure you give yourself the best chance of getting that invitation to an interview. Many people find this task daunting, however we have broken it down to 3 easy steps for you to follow:

  • Personal Profile

Highlight your transferable skills relevant to the new industry. Acknowledge your interest and passion for the new industry. Make sure to highlight your training or skills that will give you an advantage over other applicants.

  • CV Layout and Content

List out any training or education you have completed that is relevant to this new industry or role to show that you’ve been working towards and are serious about a career change. Highlight your “Key Skills” that will be a benefit to the types of jobs you are now looking for. Tailor what you can from previous positions to suit the new industry. Pay attention to the job descriptions of the roles you’re applying to and match your skills to that, if you can.

*When tailoring it to a specific industry remember to use key words that are used often within the industry/ job description. Avoid using jargon from the industry you’re leaving*

  • Career Change Cover Letter

This is a great opportunity to explain your career change and why you would be an excellent addition to any team. Keep it brief and personal, focused on your skills that would be useful to a new employer. Show that you have researched the area and are passionate about this new industry. Talk about previous experience and the hard/soft skills that you used effectively to work on projects/with groups. Use your experience to your advantage.
